OAS – Guatemala signs agreement for the General Assembly

WASHINGTON, USA – The Organization of American States (OAS) and the government of Guatemala, on Monday, signed an agreement for the holding of the 51st General Assembly, which will take place virtually between November 10 and 12.

The minister of foreign affairs of Guatemala, Pedro Brolo, emphasized that the theme of the Assembly will be “Towards Renewal in the Americas.” “Guatemala reaffirms its commitment to promoting the solidarity and hemispheric cooperation contained in the OAS Charter. This ideal is reflected in the Quetzal, our national bird and symbol of this Assembly, which represents the map of the Americas,” added foreign minister Brolo.

For his part, the secretary-general of the OAS, Luis Almagro, recalled that this will be the second year that the General Assembly will be held virtually and said that the Organization is ready to make the most important annual meeting of the OAS a success. “Dear friend foreign minister Brolo, we will have everything prepared so that this meeting of the General Assembly allows us to advance in the construction of a strengthened America under a renewed and sustainable approach,” said secretary-general Almagro.

The OAS Representative in Guatemala, Diego Paz -who participated in the virtual ceremony along with foreign minister Brolo from Guatemala City – signed the agreement on behalf of the secretary-general of the hemispheric institution.

The General Assembly is the highest body of the OAS. All member states are represented in it, normally at the level of the foreign minister.
