OAS general secretariat appoints goodwill ambassador

WASHINGTON, USA – The Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, appointed soccer leader and social activist Evelina Cabrera as Goodwill Ambassador for Equity in Sports of the Organization of American States (OAS).

“It is an honor to have Evelina as an ally of the OAS, who fights every day for social inclusion and the empowerment of women and children. Her example inspires and will inspire millions of girls and boys and young people in the Hemisphere to improve themselves using sport as a tool and thus improve their quality of life and access to rights,” said the secretary-general. “Sport must be egalitarian, and this objective becomes even more important in the context of a pandemic, because many women, young people and children in vulnerable situations lost access to education, health, and other basic rights,” he added.

Cabrera, for her part, said she felt “very happy with this appointment.” “It is a great responsibility that I will take on with great pride. Together with the OAS, we will have the opportunity to reach more children throughout the region. Sport is a reflection of society. All boys and girls see sport as a game, but it is also an excuse to develop other topics that are taboo such as sex education, gender awareness workshops, domestic violence, discrimination and many other social problems that without sport are more difficult to talk about,” she added.

The joint work of Cabrera and the OAS general secretariat will be focused on promoting projects that close the gender gap and promote equity in sports.
