Trinidad and Tobago opposition leader urge candidates to remain committed

Dear Sir:

The United National Congress (UNC) remains committed to giving the people of Trinidad and Tobago a real choice, a party that they can vote for, in the upcoming local government and general elections. The last four years have been a demonstration of the complete failure of the Keith Rowley regime, a government without a plan.

Given their lack of achievement, we expect them to resort to political gamesmanship. Their gamesmanship will not bait the UNC. Instead, we will stick to sharing our plans for the transformation of our country into a better, more equitable Trinidad and Tobago.

To all candidates, representatives, supporters, and well-wishers of our great party, as we get into the heat of election campaigning, I urge you to remember what our party stands for the development of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

Opponents may confront you with personal attacks following the standard set by their leadership who use positions of power to attack, berate and intimidate members of the public. You must always conduct yourselves with honesty and dignity. You are all leaders of our nation, and you are to hold yourselves to a higher standard. You must always strive to be a representative of the people.

At all times, stick to sharing our plans for the transformation of our country into a better, more equitable Trinidad and Tobago. Do not engage in dirty political fights and most importantly, do not repeat the mistakes from the past; instead, use them to learn and grow.

Let us keep our campaign clean and refrain from insults; we are the party that will do the work to build our country. I hold all of you in high regard, and I applaud your willingness to come forward and serve, as there is no service greater than service to God and our nation. Let us make our country proud and our party proud.

Good luck to all in the upcoming elections and continue to spread the word of the UNC, as we prepare to return good governance and prosperity to Trinidad and Tobago. And remember – when we work – we win.

Kamla Persad Bissessar, MP, SC

Political Leader of the United National Congress (UNC)
