On January 14, during an ‘‘update to the nation’ prime minister and minister for finance Allen Chastanet, said on national television, “… because there’s no point in saving people if in fact their livelihoods are being affected.”

No amount of spinning and mopping-up by the prime minister, senior communications officer, Nicole McDonald can change the fact that all the actions and words of prime minister Allen Chastanet have shown that he never really cared about the welfare of Saint Lucians. Her feeble explanation has only served to highlight the insensitivity and callousness of the statement by the prime minister.
McDonald provides the entire quote which clearly shows that the prime minister’s primary focus has been on tourism and not on saving and protecting lives.
The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) has repeatedly called for more community testing, second testing for tourists, income support programmes, social safety nets; and more rigid and robust protocols especially in light of this most recent spike.
The prime minister stated what he meant, ”there’s no point in saving people if in fact their livelihoods are affected.” As is customary, blame is once again being directed at the people of Saint Lucia, and not squarely on the actions or inactions of this government.
The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) believes that this is a prime opportunity for the government to explore other revenue-generating sectors and to invest in the people of Saint Lucia. Instead, the government has been primarily focused on borrowing and implementing elections projects. We call on the prime minister, once again to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of the people. With life, there is always a possibility of a livelihood. With no life, there is no livelihood.
