Economic reopening: Plans in Panama

PANAMA CITY, Panama — After restrictions were imposed on people’s mobility during the holiday season to stop the spread of covid-19, Panamanian authorities reported that as of January 14 there will be a return to the process of “gradual and asymmetric reopening.

In a press conference, the minister of health, Luis Francisco Sucre, informed that due to the fact that a balance was achieved in the incidence of covid-19 cases, it was decided to lift the quarantine that had been in place since the beginning of the year and as of January 14 the curfew for the entire country will be from 9:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. the following day.

In the case of the provinces of Panama and West Panama, total quarantines will be maintained on weekends, starting on Fridays at 9:00 pm and ending on Mondays at 4:00 am.

Regarding the economic reopening process, the Minister of Commerce and Industries, Ramon Martinez, said that “… as of February 1st, retail commerce will be able to operate in person, keeping the corresponding capacity, the beauty parlors and barber stores.

From February 15, it will be the turn of car wash, tailors, shoe shops, creative and cultural industries, restaurants with mandatory use of acrylic screens, Martinez said.

The article in Prensa.com adds that “… On March 1, the fitness centers, massage rooms, esthetics, spa, lottery and racetrack will open. Meanwhile, on March 15 the beaches, spas, cinemas, casinos and gambling will reopen.
