Jamaica head to the polls September 3

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Tuesday, announced September 3, 2020, the 18th general election since Universal Adult Suffrage in 1944, speaking in parliament. Nomination Day will be Tuesday, August 18.

“I have advised the governor-general to dissolve parliament to dissolve parliament on August 13, the governor-general is expected to take the necessary steps to dissolve the parliament by proclamation.

“I have decided to announce the elections in Parliament because it is important that this House, that is the people’s house, though divided by aisle – I am asking that we are united as country. We go to elections bearing in mind that we must be united to fight the pandemic,” he said.

Holness announcement comes following last Saturday opposition People’s National Party (PNP) presenting 63 candidates during a meeting at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies in St Andrew.

The Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) last Sunday held a central executive meeting and presented the party’s full list of 63 candidates which led to indications and confirmation by Holness to indicate that certain announcements “soon, soon”.

That moment has arrived. Holness general election campaign is expected to run under the theme ‘Recovering Stronger’.

Meanwhile, on election watch in the Caribbean, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia are contemplating advantageous options. The prime minister of Saint Lucia is on vacation until August 22, 2020.
