Construction of Liza Unity on schedule

By Anara Khan

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (DPI) – The completion of Guyana’s second floating, production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO), the Liza Unity, is on schedule, director of the department of energy, Dr Mark Bynoe announced during a virtual press conference on Monday.

“The topsides fabrication is progressing well with all 19 modules under construction. Several trees/tubing heads have been completed, with the first two trees having been shipped to Trinidad from Brazil, with trees 3-8 expected to be shipped shortly,” he said.

Dr Bynoe highlighted that the operator is working with the energy department to include Guyanese expertise in various stages of the Unity’s completion as per the FDP approval.

In September 2020, SBM Offshore commenced the construction phase of the Liza Unity FPSO following ExxonMobil’s final investment decision (FID) on the Liza Phase 2 development, in May 2019. An ultra-large crude carrier (ULCC) class tanker is being converted into the 220,000 barrels per day Liza Unity FPSO.

The Liza Unity FPSO will be the largest capacity FPSO the company has ever delivered and it’s first to be built under its Fast4Ward® programme. The vessel will be designed to have associated gas treatment capacity of 400 million cubic feet per day and water injection capacity of 250,000 barrels per day.

The FPSO will be spread moored in a water depth of about 1,600 meters and will be able to store around two million barrels of crude oil.
